As a Technical Artist, you are someone who loves solving complex technical problems to push the artistic possibilities. Your primary duties, under the direction of the Lead Technical Artist are in leading the technical art team in making the game look great, perform great and making their tools and pipelines great.

YOUR MISSION
  • Push the visual excellence of the project by solving complex technical art problems
  • Work proactively with team members to improve workflows and increase the speed and efficiency of the art team
  • Collaborate with feature teams to design, implement, document and maintain content creation pipelines and tools
  • Research and prototype new technologies to keep the project on the cutting edge
  • Support your colleagues with troubleshooting and mentorship to raise and maintain the technical expertise of the whole art team
  • Advise on the technical feasibility and possible risks of new features

YOUR SKILL TREE

  • Previous experience with technical art in a professional game development environment with at least one shipped title in a technical art role
  • Deep overall understanding of and experience with Unreal Engine, ideally with a strong specialization in either performance optimization, tool creation/editor modification, visual effects, or materials & rendering
  • Experience devising and supporting modern 3D art asset creation pipelines
  • Ability to take and apply direction and work well in an interdisciplinary team environment
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Experience writing tools with Python, Blueprints, and/or C++

The Company:

Our client is a video game studio based in Lyon developing games for console, PC, and mobile platforms. They work both on original licenses and in partnership with renowned publishers.

Backed by their 10 years of existence, and their experienced teams, their studio has achieved many successes: several titles in the Apple Arcade Top #5, a mobile game self-published with more than 1M players, and a first console experience.

In recent years, their studio has grown and now has more than 70 people. Our client’s common objective is to develop their console activity to pursue even more ambitious projects carried out by their internal teams. Currently, they are developing 2 action/adventure games on PC/Console with prestigious partners.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and optimize shaders and VFX responding to the stylized DA of their games (Unity)
  • Document the different pipelines and tools you develop
  • Architect and update a common database between the different productions
  • Bring your experience and collaboratively advance the team
  • Anticipate the technical needs of productions (R&D)
  • Respond to the technical needs of productions and opt for the appropriate solutions

Requirements:

  • At least 3 years of experience in a shader, VFX or equivalent position
  • Console experience at one of these positions (recent would be a plus)
  • Autonomy, proactivity and very good communication
  • Know how to make a decision and justify it
  • Listening and knowing how to work in a team with different poles
  • Proficiency in Unity (HDRP and URP pipe) and Amplify Shader and/or HLSL script
  • Good understanding of programming languages, mainly Python, JavaScript, MEL and optionally C#
  • Notions on the Substance Suite
  • Appetite for cartoon-style games
  • Good artistic sense and rendering by following an artistic direction

  • creating and integrating various VFX systems inside UE5 engine (Niagara),
  • extending UE5 VFX systems to suit VFX Artists needs,
  • working closely with Technical Animators / Gameplay Programmers on implementing various gameplay driven effects,

Job requirements

  • knowledge of UE5 VFX system (Niagara),
  • knowledge of UE5 material system,
  • good knowledge of C++ (in the context of VFX programming in UE5 (creating and managing Niagara systems, emiters, data Interfaces, etc.)),
  • practical  knowledge of current trends and solutions in VFX creation pipeline,
  • teamwork skills,
  • English skills that allow you to communicate on an everyday basis.

Nice to have:

  • 3D vector and math skills,
  • practical knowledge of HLSL,
  • some experience with 3D software (Maya, Houdini),
  • practical knowledge of Niagara fluid solvers (2D and 3D fluid grids)
